NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted, according to *The New York Times*. This comes after a lengthy investigation, which has plagued the moderate Democrat for nearly a year, alongside other law enforcement probes that have led to high-profile resignations. Adams, who is seeking reelection next year, faces charges still unknown due to a sealed indictment.
The investigation, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams of the Southern District of New York, is expected to be clarified Thursday when the charges are made public.
In response to the news, Adams issued a statement asserting his innocence and pledging to contest the charges. “I always knew standing up for New Yorkers would make me a target — and a target I became,” Adams said. “If I am charged, I am innocent and will fight this with all my strength.”
The indictment follows a series of FBI raids targeting associates of Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign. On Nov. 2, federal agents executed multiple raids across the city, searching the homes of individuals linked to Adams, including his former campaign treasurer and an aide focused on Turkish relations. Federal agents also stopped Adams on the street, seizing several of his electronic devices.
Adams has consistently maintained that he has violated no rules, telling reporters on Aug. 16, “It takes discipline to defend yourself when you know you’ve done nothing wrong.”
Adams’ legal defense includes attorneys from the firm WilmerHale, though they have yet to comment on the indictment. Some of Adams’ supporters, including state Sen. Leroy Comrie, have suggested the investigation is politically or racially motivated.
Speculation continues to swirl about the timing of the indictment, with critics pointing to the upcoming presidential election and suggesting political motivations. Some of Adams’ allies, like former Gov. David Paterson, believe the investigation may be a response to Adams’ criticism of President Biden’s border policy.
Adams’ close ties to the Turkish community and his frequent travels to Turkey have also drawn attention during the investigation. How the indictment will affect Adams’ reelection campaign remains unclear, as several challengers are already preparing for the race. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo may also consider entering the mayoral contest if Adams’ legal troubles weaken his campaign.
